Schools, colleges and community engagement

We are dedicated to fostering a love for mathematics among young people and the wider community.
Our outreach activities inspire, educate, and engage, making mathematics accessible and enjoyable for all. By connecting with schools, colleges, and communities, we highlight math's relevance and impact in everyday life and help young learners see the exciting career paths that mathematics can open up. Our work allows us to connect with aspiring mathematicians, support educators, and build a community where mathematical curiosity can flourish.
Our outreach events and activities
Maths Escape Room
Step back into history and test your puzzle-solving skills with the Maths Escape Room! This immersive team activity challenges participants to solve puzzles and break codes, just like the elite codebreaking teams of World War II. It’s a fun way to develop communication, logic, and teamwork skills in a high-stakes environment.
Secret of the Winning Streak
How can mathematics help you win at rock, paper, scissors, or even improve your odds in Monopoly? This workshop dives into probability, strategy, and decision-making with practical examples from games and everyday scenarios. While we may not be able to guarantee victory every time, mathematics can certainly help you make better choices. We wrap up with a challenging game, offering participants a taste of how maths can be a million-dollar skill!
A Mathematician's Holiday
Holidays are filled with potential pitfalls, from being late for your plane to the challenge of ordering food abroad. In this game-based workshop, we reveal how mathematics can help navigate these holiday hassles, turning maths into a toolkit for solving practical problems and making your travels more enjoyable.
Maths Adventures Day
This whole-day event features hands-on activities, fun workshops and presentations for children, families and the public, delivered by our staff and students in our building Abacws. The event aims to promote understanding and appreciation of the role of Mathematics in Science and Technology and inspire the next generation of mathematicians and scientists. It is open to everyone, with a focus on children and families.
Outreach events we support
Grangetown Community Gateway
We proudly collaborate with the Grangetown Community Gateway for events such as their Careers Week, with our faculty and students offering talks and workshops. We also partner with the Further Maths Support Programme Wales to expand access to advanced maths education across the region.
SEREN
The SEREN Academy is a Welsh Government initiative designed to support Wales' brightest young scholars (age: 8-13). Our collaboration provides advanced workshops and learning materials to enrich the mathematical knowledge of SEREN students, helping to prepare them for future studies and careers in STEM fields.
So what? STEM
An event organised by the Cardiff University STEM Engagement Hub to showcase the importance of STEM subjects. The 2024 event offered 260 Year 7 and 8 students from five secondary schools, particularly those from socially deprived areas, an immersive experience. Through hands-on workshops and a Science Fayre, students challenged stereotypes about STEM and discovered the diverse skills scientists use to explore the world around us.
Children's University
Cardiff University is a proud partner of the Children’s University, an initiative that encourages young people to explore learning outside the classroom. By providing children with opportunities to engage in fun, informal learning experiences across a range of subjects, including maths, the Children’s University allows young learners to develop new skills, grow in confidence, and expand their horizons. Participants collect stamps in their Children’s University passport, which ultimately leads to a graduation ceremony celebrating their achievements.
Be a Scientist!
A fun day full of interactive activities and interesting experiments for you to experience what being a Scientist is like. It takes place annually. We participate with a stall and talks.
After Dark: Science On Show
An annual outreach event for families, organised at the National Museum Cardiff, by Cardiff University. We participate with exciting mathematical games.
