Equality, diversity and inclusion
We are committed to promoting equality, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in all our activities.
Our aim is to establish, support and foster an inclusive and welcoming culture which ensures equal opportunities for staff and students with protected characteristics defined by the Equality Act 2010 and beyond.
Athena SWAN
We hold an Athena Swan Silver Award which was awarded in March 2024, demonstrating our commitment to gender equality. The assessment panel particularly commended our engaging EDI activities and events, our role in training students to be EDI ambassadors, and our robust commitment to EDI principles.
Our EDI Committee regularly reviews the school’s performance against the action plan agreed as part of that award.
Events
Throughout the year, events are held to promote equality and diversity within our school. These include:
- Special EDI-tion Colloquium Series – a platform for discussions on EDI matters within the mathematics community
- TEASER forums - periodic directed exchanges for staff only on teaching and supervisory practices, with a focus on EDI
We also work with our colleagues across the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering organising activities to improve diversity across science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) subjects as part of the DiSTEM network. The Women in Mathematics and Computer Science Society also regularly organises events for female-identifying students.
Keep up to date with our events.
EDI Committee
Our EDI Committee meets regularly during term time to review our activities and plans, and to create a range of actions and procedures to promote EDI across the school. Our Directors of EDI offer advice to the school Management Board and make sure that EDI is embedded in all the school decisions.
