International engagement

Our School is a dynamic, inclusive, and globally minded community.

We host over 100 students from more than 30 countries and 30% of our staff  are from international backgrounds.

We maintain strong academic partnerships with several prestigious universities worldwide, including:

  • Beijing Normal University, China
  • Beijing University of Technology, China
  • The Chinese University of Mining Technologies, China
  • Xiamen University, China
  • Vellore Institute of Technology, India
  • Xiamen University, Malaysia

These partnerships grant the students in the collaborating institutions access to the School's undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. They promote cross-cultural understanding that helps local students to broaden their worldview and foster international partnerships and opportunities.

International research

Our research has an international reach with our staff collaborating with researchers across the globe on a wide range of mathematical topics and publishing together in top-tier journals. Our faculty members organise and participate in numerous international conferences, workshops and other scientific events every year.

Through our research, we are addressing several global and critical societal challenges.

Our Healthcare Modelling team in the Operational Research group, has worked on improving patient outcomes in reducing healthcare costs, applying the work to Germany as well as the UK.  They have also been working closely with several partners in Indonesia, particularly focussed on healthcare modelling topics including helping to design a new free-to-use and coordinated ambulance service across Jakarta that is helping to save lives.

Additionally, they have forged close collaborations with government agencies and healthcare providers and with several universities, including Bakri (Jakarta), the Institute of Technology Bandung (ITB), and the Universitas Negeri Malang.  Activities to date have included delivering teaching on stochastic methods, simulation and forecasting and facilitating staff and student mobility between the UK and Indonesia.

Other impactful projects include expanding the reach of Python coding in Africa and predicting tsunamis around the world using AI, in coordination with UNESCO.

International societies and organisations

Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics

Our School hosts the SIAM-IMA student chapter. This was formed in 2012 under the aegis of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and is supported also by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications. It includes students and faculty members from across Cardiff University who are interested in mathematics or scientific computing and their real-world applications. All student members of the Chapter are eligible for free student SIAM membership.

European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry

We have been institutional members of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) since 2019. ECMI is a consortium of academic institutions and companies that acts co-operatively to promote and support the use of mathematical modelling, simulation, and optimization in any activity of social or economic importance, on a European scale. They also aim to educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts. Dr Katerina Kaouri sits on the ECMI Council as one of two academic representatives based at UK institutions.
