Postgraduate research
We offer a wide range of opportunities for postgraduate study in an exciting, challenging and rewarding environment.
As a postgraduate student you will collaborate with scholars working on world-leading research. The School benefits from substantial research funding from the EPSRC, as well as other public and private bodies.
In your first year you will follow an agreed programme of study to introduce you to research skills and methods and advance your knowledge in your chosen field. This includes a broad choice of postgraduate courses provided through the national collaborative networks
We host regular seminars in all of our subject areas with renowned speakers, and also run the Cardiff Mathematics Colloquia and the annual Welsh Mathematics Colloquium, all of which provide insight into cutting-edge research.
Research areas
The principle areas in which we offer supervision towards the research degrees of MPhil and PhD are pure mathematics, applied mathematics, operational research, and probability and statistics.
Please explore the research interests of our research groups and academic staff to identify an area of postgraduate research.
When to apply
You can apply at any time during the year, but should allow at least 3 months before your desired entry point to process your application.
There are four entry points per year:
- 1 October (fits best with academic term and training dates)
- 1 January
- 1 April
- 1 July
If you wish to be considered for a studentship, we advise applying six months before your entry date.
Funding
We award a small number of EPSRC-funded doctoral studentships each year.
We welcome applications if you are self-funding or have funding from other sources, including government studentships or your employer. We actively invite applications in our main areas of interest.
