Culture, values and wellbeing

We strive to maintain a workplace culture that values, supports and celebrates our staff.

Our School is a relaxed professional environment, and we pride ourselves on creating an open and friendly school for everyone.

As a School, we understand the importance of feeling comfortable at work. We have a relaxed dress code that encourages our staff to be themselves. Whether it's casual attire or something more formal, we want our colleagues to feel confident and comfortable whilst they're at work.

Work-life balance

At the School of Computer Science and Informatics, colleagues can discuss flexible working, temporary change in hours, extended leave and other arrangements to help them achieve a better work-life balance. Further information can be found in our Work-Life Balance policy.

Wellbeing

Employee Assistance Programme

As our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) provider, Vivup offers a range of services to support you and help you better prepare for and cope with life events - including the things that could potentially cause you anxiety and stress.

Wellbeing Café

The Wellbeing Café is a warm, welcoming space for our School community to relax, feel comfortable, share experiences, and learn together. The Wellbeing Café is run monthly and is an opportunity to socialise and meet new people, learn about new activities, and enjoy taster sessions and various wellbeing activities.

Everyone is welcome at the Wellbeing Café, and you can join in for as much or as little as you feel comfortable. As a safe environment, it helps you to build your confidence in meeting others, socialising and potentially making new friends.

Each month the café is centered around a theme, and we are happy to take suggestions.

Events and activities

Throughout the year, we organise various events and activities to bring our staff together in a relaxed, informal environment. These include:

  • Staff Away Days: We often gather all staff for days of team-building activities and strategic planning. We appreciate this type of work isn’t for everyone, so always aim to provide activities which suit a number of different people.
  • Team-Specific Days: Tailored for colleagues in similar roles within the school, these days focus on specific needs and interests. For instance, we have held a Professional Services well-being day and a Teaching Associate's away day.
  • Staff Ping-Pong: Enjoy a game of ping-pong in our sociable staff and Postgraduate Research room.
  • Pub Socials: A relaxing way to socialise with colleagues outside of work.
  • New Parent Presents: We celebrate life's milestones with thoughtful gifts for staff welcoming new arrivals into their lives.
  • Charity Coffee Mornings: Come together for a good cause and enjoy some delicious treats over meaningful conversations.
  • Networking Opportunities: From networking coffee breaks with other schools to networking sessions before all-staff meetings, we provide ample opportunities to connect and collaborate.
  • Bring Your Kids to Work: Family is important to us, which is why we encourage staff to bring their kids to work on special occasions, fostering a family-friendly environment.
