Apply for Betty Campbell Scholarship

The scholarship is open to all students studying 20 credits or more in Welsh. We particularly encourage students who may face obstacles or uncertainty in learning Welsh at the University level.

We have named this award The Betty Campbell Scholarship to honour a remarkable individual who dedicated her life to fighting inequality and made inclusivity inherent to all her educational work.

We want to ensure that our efforts in Yr Academi Gymraeg are inspired by Betty's values and her passion for Wales, its history, and its culture as an integral part of Cardiff's global story.

We encourage you to share your experiences in the application, including real-life examples of the challenges you have overcome as a Welsh speaker. While AI software may assist you in answering these questions, we want to hear about your experiences in your own words.

To be eligible for the scholarship, students must:

  • be eligible for UK student funding for living costs (as defined in the student support funding regulations)
  • be enrolled on an undergraduate course at Cardiff University
  • be studying 20 credits or more through the medium of Welsh
  • complete the application form by the required deadline
  • follow the guidelines below and accept the terms and conditions

Awards will be up to a maximum of £1,000 per year:

  • £1,000 for 40 credits of Welsh-medium study

The payment arrangements will be detailed when the awards are made, but they will be paid after your module choices are confirmed. Students must make a new application each year that they're eligible.

More than anything, we want students to make the most of their studies and enjoy being part of the Welsh-speaking and broader student community at Cardiff University. We encourage all students to participate in extra-curricular student opportunities to enhance the learning experience and be best prepared for whatever they decide to do after completing their studies.
