Undergraduate Open Day rail discount

Get a discount when you book your train ticket to our undergraduate Open Days with Great Western Railway and Transport for Wales.

Great Western Railway (GWR) are offering a 20% discount on Advance Purchase rail tickets to our Open Days on 14 September 2024 and 19 October 2024.

How to get the discount

Buy your discounted rail tickets. No code is needed, and the discount is applied automatically (subject to availability, see terms and conditions). If further assistance is required, please call GWR on +44 (0)345 700 0125 (option 2, then option 2 again).

‘Advanced Purchase Ticket’ and when to buy it

‘Advance Purchase’ refers to a ticket that can be purchased up to 18:00 on the day before travel, subject to availability. Once purchased, it is non-flexible (i.e. unable to change times or dates of travel) and non-refundable.

I cannot see the discounted fare

‘Advance Purchase’ for the student fare are denoted by a small cross against the ticket price. If there is no red cross shown, then the advance purchase fares for that day may have sold out. Once the discounted fare has been chosen an asterisk ‘*’ will be displayed underneath the fares section.

The link to the booking page does not work

You may need to update your internet browser, we advise using Google Chrome or Firefox. There may be a need to clear your cookies.

I cannot see the promotional fare

Travel is only available on GWR routes, check the entirety of the journey is on GWR. Please also check the booking horizon. Sales open for Advance Purchase 12 weeks before travel.

Terms and conditions

  1. Booking can only be made through the link provided
  2. The Open Days GWR travel offer is only available for travel on GWR services. If travelling from or within a region of the country that is not part of the GWR network you may need to purchase separate tickets to the chosen destination
  3. The destination must be relevant to Cardiff University i.e. Cardiff Central, Cathays or Cardiff Queen Street
  4. Origin of the journey must be within the GWR network, but please note that Advance Purchase tickets are not available for short-distance journeys
  5. The scheme is only available for use with Advance Purchase tickets. These set times and dates of travel are non-exchangeable and non-refundable
  6. The Open Days GWR travel offer is available for the dates provided by Cardiff University and the week that the event takes place, running from Saturday to the next Sunday. So stay for more than a day to get a feel for the local scene
  7. Discount can be used with Railway Card 16-25. Tick the box on the page next to it and select from the drop-down menu

Note that the discount is only valid when tickets are purchased directly from GWR.com and not through a third party such as Trainline.

Transport for Wales

Transport for Wales is offering a 10% discount on rail tickets to our Open Day on Saturday 14 September 2024.

How to get the discount

Tickets will be available to buy immediately for travel from 13 September to 15 September 2024 (inclusive) for those wishing to travel to Cardiff the day before or those returning the day after the event.

If you have any questions or issues regarding this offer, contact Transport for Wales, rather than Cardiff University.

Cardiff Central must be selected as the destination when booking to attend our Open Day. Our main campus, Cathays Park, is just a short bus or train ride away from Cardiff Central Station.

Tickets may only be purchased through the Transport for Wales Business Travel team via the telephone where payment will be made using a credit or debit card.

The TFW Business Travel team is available 09:30-16:30 Monday – Friday, call TFW on 02920 720515.

  2. The 10% discount is available on TFW Advance fares only
  3. Tickets are time-specific tickets – valid only on the specified train
  4. Tickets will be collected using a Ticket on Departure reference – provided at the time of booking
