The Yr Academi Gymraeg Betty Campbell Scholarship offers a unique opportunity for students who encounter challenges or uncertainty when studying through the medium of Welsh.

This scholarship is a tribute to Betty Campbell, Wales’ first Black headteacher and a dedicated advocate for multiculturalism. Inspired by her values and passion for Welsh history and culture, we have named this award in her honour.

Betty Campbell devoted her life to promoting inclusivity and challenging inequality, ensuring that education was accessible to all. Through this scholarship, Yr Academi Gymraeg seeks to uphold her legacy, embedding her principles into our commitment to Welsh language education as part of Cardiff’s diverse and global narrative.

Successful students can receive up to £1,000 per year for a maximum of three years. Additionally, they will get support to explore opportunities to contribute to Yr Academi Gymraeg and engage with other roles as Welsh language Student Ambassadors.

"The scholarship appealed as a space for intersectionality within the Welsh community in the university, offering a system of support that recognises being from a marginalised group and the need for contact – working as a bridge between some of us, Welsh speakers, that might not have been immersed as much in the Welsh side of things."
