Preliminary or Foundation courses

A number of preliminary courses are available to students who do not have the appropriate A-level/AS qualifications to enter the first year of a degree scheme.

Engineering with a Foundation Year (BEng) H101 Full time
Optometry with Preliminary Year (MOptom) B514 Full time

If you are seeking admission to a degree programme incorporating a Preliminary or Foundation Year you should apply via UCAS.

You’ll need to show the Admissions Tutor that you’re ready to succeed in a degree programme.

The Preliminary Year isn't intended for students who didn't meet the required A-level grades.

For information about entry requirements for your chosen programme of study, please contact the Admissions Tutor for your academic school.

International Study Centre

The International Study Centre offers a range of foundation and international year one programmes designed specifically for international students looking to progress onto our courses.

Alternative ways to access our degrees

Pathway programmes are an alternative to A-level and access qualifications and are often aimed at adult learners or those returning to education, helping them bridge any gaps in qualifications or experience before starting their degree.

We have developed a number of pathways to an undergraduate degree which are taught on a part-time basis in the evenings and weekends in a friendly and relaxed setting.
