Y Lle

The home of Yr Academi Gymraeg is the heart and focal point for the university’s Welsh language and culture.

Y Lle welcomes all those who speak, learn, and support Cymraeg to work and co-create.

What is Y Lle?

Y Lle is a special place where people can come together to enjoy and support Welsh culture and language.

It’s designed to be welcoming and collaborative, marking an important step in our efforts to build a strong Welsh-speaking community.

Where is Y Lle?

The centre at 53 Park Place is a new, central location opposite the Psychology Tower Building for our Academi Gymraeg staff, the Cardiff branch of Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, and our Learn Welsh Cardiff’s Work Welsh tutor.

Facilities

In addition to hot desking and meeting facilities, we also have a social space where colleagues and students can meet and immerse themselves in Gymraeg, the Welsh language.

Catrin Jones, our Academi Gymraeg Manager provides further insight into what Y Lle has to offer:

A touch of Welsh magic

At Y Lle, which translates to ‘the place’, we’ve crafted a welcoming environment that embodies our Welsh heritage.

Every piece of furniture in this space has been thoughtfully repurposed, adding a touch of Welsh magic. We upcycled ten office furniture items using exquisite Welsh wool fabrics from Melin Tregwynt, collaborating with the Bridgend-based factory, BOF.

Celebrating Welsh artwork

We also serve as a canvas for original artworks and poetry. Our walls proudly display creations by Welsh-speaking artists and those with a strong connection to the Welsh language.

French Creole artist Eric Lesdema’s photographic prints grace the building, capturing his interactions with Welsh-speaking staff and students. Eric has been our artist-in-residence over the past year and his images delve into their relationship with the language, providing a unique perspective.

Alongside Eric’s prints, you’ll find works by renowned Welsh artists Iwan Bala and Elfyn Lewis. Together, this fusion of art and poetry creates an environment that reflects Welsh culture and celebrates the language itself.
