The Cardiff Citizen module

This informal 5-credit short module aims to offer an engaging and interactive learning environment for first-year students who have Welsh language skills.

Students will have the opportunity to explore and gain knowledge about the city of Cardiff and the Welsh language within the context of the local community, the university, and the vibrant multiculturalism that our capital city offers.

Dinesydd Caerdydd/Cardiff Citizen offers an excellent opportunity to:

  • socialise and collaborate with other students through group learning activities
  • connect and interact with fellow first-year students from across the university
  • fully utilise and enhance Welsh-language skills to their maximum potential

The transition to university and city life

The course aims to help students seamlessly adjust to university and city life during their first semester. It was developed with input from current students to ensure that the experience is fresh, interesting, and engaging.

The Cardiff Citizen module serves as a complement to the course-specific Welsh-medium provision available in twelve different disciplines.

Enrolment

Undergraduate students who indicate fluency in Welsh will automatically enrol in the course.

Postgraduate-taught students can also enrol in the course by emailing academi@caerdydd.ac.uk.

During the first few weeks of the semester, students will attend three in-person sessions. In these sessions, they will hear from interesting and varied guest speakers from Cardiff and learn about and explore the city via a specially curated walking tour.

Working in small groups, students will choose a short project to collaborate on, fostering teamwork and valuable citizenship skills to enhance their CV, regardless of their field of study.

Yr Academi Gymraeg Betty Campbell Scholarship

This scholarship aims to pay tribute to a remarkable individual for whom inclusivity was inherent to all her educational work and who dedicated her life to fighting inequality.

We aim to ensure that her values and enthusiasm for Wales, its history and culture, as part of Cardiff’s global story, inspire our work in Yr Academi Gymraeg.

The scholarship is open to all students studying 20 credits or more in Welsh, and we particularly encourage students who may face obstacles or uncertainty about studying in Welsh at the university level.

If you're interested in applying for this scholarship that offers to fund up to £1,000 to eligible students, please visit Academi Gymraeg Betty Cambell Scholarship for more information on how to apply.
