Scholarships for studying in Welsh

These are the scholarships available to study through the medium of Welsh at Cardiff University.

Betty Campbell Scholarship

The Betty Campbell Scholarship is now open for applications and will close on Friday 7 February 2025.

Amount: up to £1,000 each year

The scholarship is open for all students studying at least 20 credits each year through the medium of Welsh.

We particularly welcome applications from students who may face obstacles or have uncertainties about studying in Welsh at university level.

Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarships

You can apply for Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol scholarships when you join the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

The Main Scholarship

The application period is currently open and will end on 24 January 2025.

Amount: £3,000 over three years

You are eligible if you study at least 66% (80 credits) of your course each year through the medium of Welsh, and begin your studies in September 2024.

The Incentive Scholarship

The application window for this scholarship is now open and the closing date is on 22 October 2024.

Amount: £1,500 over 3 years (£500 a year)

You are eligible if you study at least 33% of your course (40 credits) in any subject each year through the medium of Welsh and will begin your studies in September or October 2024.

The Medicine Scholarship

The application form for September 2025 is now open until 15 October 2024.

Amount: £2,500 over 5 years (£500 each year)

You are eligible if you:

  • are considering applying for a Medicine course in Wales
  • study at least 33% of your course (40 credits) each year through the medium of Welsh

The Gareth Pierce Bursary

The application window is open until 1 October 2024.

Amount: £3,000 for the first year only

In memory of its former Chief Executive, the WJEC has created the Gareth Pierce Bursary to support students who study at least 33% of Maths courses in Welsh. Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol is managing the bursary on behalf of WJEC.

The Nursing Scholarship

The application window for this scholarship is now closed

Amount: £1,500 over 3 years (£500 each year)

You are eligible if you are a nursing student if you study at least 33% (40 credits) of your course in Welsh.

Cardiff University's Studying in Welsh Scholarship

Amount: up to £500 each year

A scholarship is available from the university if you choose to study through the medium of Welsh.

For every 20 credits you study in Welsh each year, you will receive £250, and for every 40 credits you study in Welsh each year, you will receive £500. The most you could get is £500.

To apply for this scholarship, please complete the Studying in Welsh Scholarship application form (available in Welsh only) and email it to the university's Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Branch Officer, Elliw Iwan.

If you are already receiving a Coleg Cymraeg Incentive Scholarship, Coleg Cymraeg Main Scholarship, or the Medicine/Doctors of Tomorrow Scholarship, you are not eligible to apply for the university's Study in Welsh Scholarship.
