Armed Forces Units

All three armed services offer our students training opportunities.

These can provide you with the opportunity to gain military skills and take part in sporting, adventure and social activities as well as offering valuable opportunities for personal development.

Most students who get involved find it a very worthwhile experience and there is no obligation to join the services on completion of your studies.

University Royal Naval Unit

The Royal Naval Unit offers training in all aspects of navigation, seamanship and leadership skills. The Unit has its own dedicated ship, HMS Express, which is based in Cardiff Bay.

Members may practise their newly acquired seamanship knowledge during weekends and the Easter and summer holidays, when the ship deploys in UK and European waters.

Officer Training Corps

The Wales University Officer Training Corps (WUOTC) has a base at Maindy Barracks, a short walk from the University. Training centres on leadership skills, decision making and teamwork as well as some basic military skills like map reading, first aid, shooting and survival.

Social events range from formal dinners, beating retreats and a May Ball as well as a host of less formal parties. During the vacations, many WUOTC members take part in adventure training expeditions.

University Air Squadron

The University of Wales Air Squadron (UWAS) offers free flying training and personal development and leadership training to students who have an interest in finding out more about the Royal Air Force. The Squadron is based at MOD St Athan, near Cardiff.
