University College Cardiff institutional records
Documents pertaining to University Council, Court and Senate, the Principal, Charters and Statutes, and the 1980s merger with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST).
The archive contains University publications (handbooks, prospectuses), as well as information on University prizes and academic societies, financial, human and physical resources, University events (addresses, ceremonies, lectures), the University Grants Committee, and the history of the University.
The University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire was founded in 1883. The name ‘University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire’ was legally changed to ‘University College Cardiff’ in 1972, in order to formally recognise the existence of another University College in South Wales - Swansea, which was founded in 1920. However, the name ‘University College Cardiff’ had appeared on published material since the early 1960s.
