Placements

We prepare our students for life after university by working with a range of organisations to offer relevant work experience.

From day one, we encourage students to think about life beyond university, offering valuable modules and support.

“My placement really helped me develop my analysis skills and build my confidence.”

Placement student Emelie chatted with us about her work experience at Cardiff University.

Our dedicated employability and placements manager advises on work placements, internships and work experience.

Most of our second-year students can take modules that give insight into careers, adding a work placement to their studies.

Placements are provided by the school based on students’ interests and preferences where possible.

Most placement hosts are based in Cardiff within easy reach of the University. Previous hosts include:

  • Welsh Government
  • Public Health Wales
  • NSPCC
  • British Council
  • Institute of Welsh Affairs
  • Universities’ Police Science Institute
  • DVLA
  • Arad Research
  • Primary schools
  • Legal practices
  • Third sector

One-year internships

All of our single honours and many of our joint honours programmes are available as four-year options, with the placement taking place in the third year. Years one, two and four will be taught in our School.

Several of our undergraduates have secured one-year paid internships with the Welsh Government’s Social Research Internship Scheme.

Summer placements

UK

Cardiff University Research Opportunities Programme (CUROP), one of the UK’s largest undergraduate research schemes, provides summer placements for undergraduates in the university research environment. Bursaries are offered to support students on a placement of up to eight weeks duration, working under supervision on staff-defined research projects.

International

Our students can take on research projects in institutions around the world with the chance to work or volunteer abroad through the university’s Global Opportunities.

In recent years, students from our School have taken opportunities based in Auckland, Barcelona, Beijing, Dortmund, New York, Ottawa, Fiji, India, Japan and Thailand.
