Richard Price was one of the architects of the modern world—a philosopher, political thinker, and polymath.
His obituary suggested he would be remembered alongside Jefferson and Washington. He is Wales’s greatest thinker, and following the tercentenary celebrations of his birth in 2023, Cardiff University has adopted a society in his name.
The Society’s activities will reflect the spirit of Price’s career as a public intellectual, contributing to developments across multiple disciplines. It will serve as a hub for interdisciplinary, policy-oriented research that is philosophically informed, critically engaged, and forward-thinking. Public engagement will be central to its mission, complementing and collaborating with other policy-focused bodies in Wales to foster original, transformative thinking.
Simultaneously, the Society will act as a focal point for academic study and public memory of Richard Price, promoting discussion and research on Welsh intellectual history and its relevance to contemporary policy issues.
To achieve these aims, the Society will host the annual Richard Price Lecture, addressing contemporary issues through the lens of Welsh intellectual history and the disciplines Price influenced. It will also produce the Richard Price Newsletter Blog and email list, disseminating the latest research on Price and updates on the Society’s activities.
