Founded in 2019, Cardiff Centre for Asian Studies is a successor to the Centre for the Study of Religion in Asia (2009).
It provides a pioneering forum of clustered interdisciplinary learning, networks and expertise for scholars of South Asia, East Asia and South-East Asian history, society, politics, religious studies, classics and archaeology.
The centre is located in the School of History, Archaeology and Religion, Cardiff University. The School is only one of three universities in the UK to bring together the disciplines of Archaeology and Conservation, Religious Studies, Ancient, Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary History.
The Centre links with other faculties and Asian specialists from Cardiff University’s diverse subjects and schools, including the School of Journalism, Media and Culture, Welsh School of Architecture, School of English, Communication and Philosophy, Social Science Research Park, School of Modern Languages, School of Law and Politics. The scholarly community within the Centre encompasses all career stages from graduate students to professorial staff providing a hub for building networks and disseminating research findings within the broader area of Asia.
The Centre is guided by core principles of inclusivity and unity in diversity. Its aim is to build sustainable and meaningful ties with the Asian diasporas in Wales and engaging in collaborative projects with local museums and Asian community organisations in Wales.
Towards these goals, our civic mission programmes offer evidence-based research of knowledge of Asian communities and external partners through conferences, talks and workshops.
