Transforming event impact evaluations and staging more sustainable events: a focus on plastic consumption
This project will examine the indirect and indirect effects of plastic consumption at a mega sport event - the FIFA 2022 World Cup Qatar™.
Evaluation methods
This project with Seven Clean Seas will involve applying environmental impact evaluation methods (previously developed by the Cardiff University team) to:
- co-design and co-produce a comprehensive assessment of plastic consumption and associated carbon emissions generated by visitors attending the FIFA 2022 World Cup Qatar™
- identify visitor spending activities that generate the most plastic and most significant environmental impacts
- enhance Seven Clean Seas, the Supreme Committee and other event organiser’s understanding of the boundaries of event-based tourism and their plastic footprints
- inform policy and waste reduction strategies focused on reducing plastic consumption and lead to staging more sustainable events in the UK, Qatar and internationally
Aims
This project will bring together the expertise of both partners to co-design and co-produce a methodology that will:
- provide the first comprehensive assessment of the direct and indirect plastic consumption and associated carbon emissions generated by visitors at a major sport event
- enhance Seven Clean Seas, the Supreme Committee and other event organisers’ understanding of event-related plastic consumption and transform how plastic consumption is measured
- identify consumption behaviours that create ‘plastic hotspots’
- inform policy, waste reduction strategies and education/awareness campaigns aimed at reducing plastic consumption at future events in the UK, Qatar and internationally
This project is supported by:
