Wales Gene Park Genomic Facility
The Wales Gene Park (WGP) laboratory team facilitate access to high-throughput or Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) equipment based within Cardiff University and the NHS All Wales Genomics Service (AWMGS). This includes the TapeStation 4200, Covaris ME220, MiSeq, NovaSeq 6000 and ONT PromethION 2 Solo. WGP provide a flexible, bespoke approach to suit the needs of academic & non-academic research projects. We can offer advice and practical support from project design, sample QC, library construction and sequencing through to tertiary analysis of the data. WGP work to ensure that access and uptake of this fundamental technology is as reasonable a cost as possible.

TapeStation | Agilent TapeStation / 4200 | The 4200 TapeStation is a high-throughput automated electrophoresis platform used for sample quality control. It can provide nucleic acid size, integrity values (RIN & DIN values) and sample concentration. Each lane of the 16-lane ScreenTape uses 1-2 µL of sample (kit dependent) and take 1-2 minutes per sample, or 90 minutes for 96 to run. |
Qubit | Qubit / 2.0 | The Qubit 2.0 is a benchtop fluorometer for the quantitation of DNA, RNA, and protein. The dyes it uses preferentially bind to dsDNA, RNA or proteins, so its measurements are not affected by contaminants that may affect absorbance reading based methods. Most assays only require 1 μL of sample. |
Covaris | Covaris / ME220 | The ME220 is a bench top focused-ultrasonicator that can process from 1 to 8 samples in volumes of 15 to 500 µL. Its applications include DNA shearing & nucleic acid extraction from FFPE tissues. |
MiSeq | Illumina / MiSeq | The MiSeq desktop sequencer allows you to access applications such as targeted gene sequencing, metagenomics, small genome sequencing, targeted gene expression and amplicon sequencing. Up to 15 Gb of output with 25 Million sequencing reads and 2x300 bp read lengths. |
NovaSeq 6000 | Illumina / NovaSeq 6000 | The NovaSeq 6000 sequencer offers dual flow cell capacity, working with different flow cell types, multiple read lengths and workflows (standard and Xp). Output potential of 6 Tb with 20 Billion sequencing reads and 2x150 bp read lengths in <2 days (2x250 bp read lengths only available for smallest flow cell). Used for single cell libraries, spatial transcriptomics, WGS and WES. |
PromethION 2 Solo (P2 Solo) | Oxford Nanopore Technologies, PromethION 2 | The PromethION 2 Solo (P2) is a small benchtop device designed to run and generate data from up to two PromethION flow cells. Each flow cell can be run independently. The P2 Solo either plugs into a GridION Mk1 or high performance compute for real-time data streaming and analysis. |
