Photoelectron Spectroscopy Suite

The School of Chemistry is pleased to offer an analytical service to universities, individuals and industry.

The centre was established within the School of Chemistry, later relocating to the purpose built Translational Research Hub on the Maindy Innovation Campus. The aim of the centre is to provide a high quality, affordable analytical service for all.

X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, more commonly referred to as XPS or ESCA, is the most widely used surface analysis technique because of its relative simplicity in use and of data interpretation. The information XPS provides about surface layers or thin film structures is of value in many industrial applications including: polymer surface modification, catalysis, ceramics, corrosion, adhesion, semiconductor materials, packaging, magnetic media, thin film coatings and even medical implants, bio-materials, teeth and bones.
