Emergency Airway Management (EAM) At The Front Door (blended)
A bespoke airway course designed to upskill emergency physicians to deliver high quality advanced airway management and emergency anaesthesia during patient resuscitation in the Emergency Department.
This course has been developed to address the teaching and training need in EAM and takes advantage of:
- high-fidelity simulation facilities (at Cardiff University’s Emergency Medicine Academic Centre (EMAC)
- small group teaching of just 3 delegates per group
- highly skilled and experienced consultant faculty (with years of experience of performing and leading intubation in both Emergency Departments and the pre-hospital environment).

Who it’s for
This course is primarily designed for all emergency physicians practising both in the emergency department and prehospital setting, who already have basic skills in laryngoscopy and airway management. Content is appropriate for emergency physicians working in Wales, the UK and internationally.
What you’ll learn
Course content has been created in alignment with Royal College of Emergency Medicine curriculum and European Society of Emergency medicine recommendations for EAM. Delegates will learn modern EAM skills required by all emergency physicians in the resus room. On completion of this clinical CPD course delegates should be able to:
- perform RSI and DSI (including deciding on the appropriate drugs)
- manage the heavily soiled airway (using the SALAD technique)
- use hyperangulated blades for challenging anatomical airways
- manage the intra-cardiac arrest airway
- establish mechanical ventilation and post intubation sedation
- optimise patients' anatomy and physiology prior to and during laryngoscopy.
Topics covered
Pre-course learning (3 hours)
eLearning modules consist of a video lectures and demonstrations, up-to-date reading recommendations and optional formative questions to test knowledge. All course material will be provided for 6 weeks before and 6 weeks after the face-to-face course.
Face to face course (7 hours)
The face to face component is where delegates will be working in small groups of 3 to develop their skills with guidance from high performing emergency physicians through simulation and extensive debrief and discussion. The following is the timetable for the day:
