Modern and well-equipped laboratories allow students to gain experience with experimental methods and equipment.

We have highly active research groups in a wide range of areas and have an international reputation for the quality of our research. Our staff are actively involved in major international collaborations, including the SPIRE instrument consortium for the Herschel satellite. The Gravity Exploration Institute is an active member of the LIGO Scientific Collaboration, which recently made the headlines for its discovery of gravitational waves.

The outstanding record of our research activities compliments the teaching on our postgraduate programmes, as our students have the opportunity to learn from academic staff truly at the forefront of their respective fields. Our track record of teaching excellence and is also supported by a range of world-class laboratory facilities.

When I was finishing my A levels I liked semiconductor, solid state physics and astrophysics. I chose Cardiff University as it has a good reputation in all of them - it was part of the discovery of gravitational waves in 2015 and there’s a really active condensed matter and photonics department in theTranslational Research Hub.
