Medicines management in care homes and the associated risks to resident’s safety remains an area of focus for care home providers, healthcare professionals and regulators.
Drs M Smith, D James & E Mantzourani and the evaluation team at Cardiff School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences has conducted a study of medicines management in care homes across South Wales as part of the Welsh Government’s Health Technology and Telehealth project. Beacon Digital Health has managed the project with sponsorship from the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board. The project uses an innovative method of linking local pharmacies with care homes ensuring that residents’ medicines are administered safely and effectively.
The symposium will present the results of the evaluation including:
- Insights into medicines administration practices
- Reduction in risk associated with medicines administration and improvements in regulatory compliance.
- Potential savings in time and efficiency of medicines management
- The role of the pharmacist in supporting care homes
The symposium is aimed at pharmacists, nurses, carers and the wider multidisciplinary team of Health and Social Care Professionals, Regulators, policy shapers and planners in Health and Social Care and others who have an interest in improving medicines safety in Wales.
