Sonja Haerkoenen
Dipl.-Bibl., MCLIP
Scholarly Publications Manager
Overview
I manage the University Library's Open Access team as well as Cardiff University Press and am responsible for liaising with all researchers in the area of Open Access publishing and self-archiving. I also work in very close collaboration with the ORCA team on matters related to the institutional repository.
I am involved in a range of projects that are currently underway in the Library Service and I contribute to national Open Access initiatives.
Externally, I am a Chartered Member of CILIP - the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals and I act as the University Library Service's (ULS) International Engagement contact, liaising with foreign institutions as well as coordinating work placements in the library from abroad.
Biography
I studied Librarianship at the University of Applied Sciences Cologne, Germany, and graduated from there with a first class degree in 2002. During my time as a library student, I worked in various libraries during placements and summer vacations: the Göttingen State and University Library, the Library of the Department of Earth Sciences at Cambridge University, and Cambridge University Library.
My professional career started with a post as Assistant Librarian at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2003, where I stayed just over a year and was responsible for the Psychology Department. During this time, I also completed my professional development portfolio and was awarded Charted Member status of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP). In 2004, I started at Cardiff University, first as Assistant Information Specialist in Trevithick Library, and then, in 2005, as Subject Librarian for European Studies and Psychology in the Arts and Social Studies Library.
In 2011 I was seconded to the ORCA / Research Support team and managed the outputs submission to the REF2014. I have also been raising awareness about Open Access and implenting related workflows and strategies at the University, leading to my appointment to the role of Scholarly Publications Manager in June 2014.
