Overview
Dr Chen Xu is a Research Associate at Welsh Economy Research Unit, she currently works on a £1.5m Superfast Broadband project funded by European Commision and Welsh Goverment, focuses on estimating the impact of digital technologies adoption on Welsh regional development. Chen is leading on compiling a detailed regional Input-output tables 2018 for Wales and specilized in practical CGE modelling of regional policy.
Before rejoinning Cardiff University, Chen was a Research Fellow in the Economics of Brexit at UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO), a partnership between University of Sussex and Chatham House. She investigated how UK firms are integrated with EU and non-EU firms, markets and regions to give policy implications for trade and Brexit during then.
Chen also has great interests in developing Satellite Accounts for unconventional activities (e.g tourism and ICT). Chen has developed a Tourism Satellite Account for Wales with regional and non-regional capital distinguished, and she has been invited to speak at United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) events as a result. Her other research interests include regional economics, tourism, digital technologies on regional development, Input-output tables, CGE modelling, regional servitization and trade. Over the years of carrying out different research projects, Chen becomes very familiar with various firm level confidential datasets from Office of National Statistics (ONS) and has developed speciality in dealing with trade datasets from HM Revenue & Custom (HMRC) through secure access. Chen is an experienced accredited researcher at both ONS SRS and HMRC datalab, and a well trained Economics modeller in Stata and GAMS.
