AJAX enables web pages to be highly dynamic.

The course teaches the basics of JavaScript, the DOM, JSON and XML in order to manipulate data on a web page.

Using HTTP, data encoded in JSON or XML can be fetched from the webserver and placed on the existing page.

PHP is used as the vehicle for server-side scripting in this course, so some knowledge of PHP or another server-side scripting language would be helpful, but not essential. You do need a good knowledge of HTML and the structure of its elements.

This course is ideal for students who wish to study the design process in creating a final web site from an idea using the latest technologies.

This course includes a mixture of tutor-led explanations and demonstrations with practical sessions. Each session begins with an introduction to the days’ topic/ task followed by a demonstration, the main portion of the session comprises tutor-led practical work, followed by question and answer time at the end to close the session. The course is a total of 40 hours long.

Learning and teaching

On completion of this course students should be able to:

  • Produce interactive web pages using AJAX
  • Use AJAX frameworks
  • Write Javascript on a web page
  • Understand the principles and operation of the DOM
  • Access and manipulate a web page using the DOM
  • Incorporate AJAX on a web page

Coursework and assessment

To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved. This course has a summative assessment method.  The assessment will comprise project work and a written class test.
