Bold Beginnings is a course for anyone – whether you are a confident writer, or completely new to the idea.
If writing is something you wish you could find more time for, or want to know how to confidently dip your toe (and thus dive straight into the pool), look no further.
This course will introduce you to skills that are integral to a creative writer’s toolbox: imagination, confidence and perseverance. Over ten weeks you will be afforded the time and space to explore new genres, both reading and writing.
You will workshop your own work, and your peers’ work in our weekly sessions. By the end of the ten-week course, you will have a creative portfolio and critical commentary to present, exemplifying your Bold Beginnings in creative writing!
If you have a project you want to explore in greater depth, a novel, poetry collection or short story, or want to start something from scratch – this module is for you.
Learning and teaching
There will be two-hour meetings once a week (20 contact hours in all) which will include discussions, exercises, craft lectures and workshops.
Online provision will be made available through Learning Central with relevant links to resources and class handouts and PowerPoint presentations.
The syllabus content will vary, depending on the expertise of the tutor and to some extent on the needs and interests of the student group.
Typically, the syllabus will comprise of a variety of exercises, reading of texts, tutor-led discussion, the sharing of student work, and will cover genres such as micro-fiction, the short story, the novel and poetry.
Coursework and assessment
To award credits we need to have evidence of the knowledge and skills you have gained or improved.
Some of this has to be in a form that can be shown to external examiners so that we can be absolutely sure that standards are met across all courses and subjects.
The most important element of assessment is that it should enhance your learning.
Our methods are designed to increase your confidence and we try very hard to devise ways of assessing you that are enjoyable and suitable for adults with busy lives.
You will complete a creative writing portfolio (1500 words) and will write a critical commentary (500 words) about your own process, considering this in a critical/theoretical way.
Reading suggestions
You will be provided with comprehensive reading suggestions at the beginning of the course. No pre-reading is required.
Library and computing facilities
As a student on this course you are entitled to join and use the University’s library and computing facilities. Find out more about using these facilities.
