OPT039 - Ocular Therapeutics for Minor Eye Conditions
This module aims to provide you with an update of the drugs that registered UK optometrists can supply or sell in the course of their professional practice for the treatment of minor eye conditions affecting the anterior eye and adnexa.
This update is regarding UK Optometrists without additional supply or independent prescribing qualifications and includes all medicinal products on a GSL and all P medicines as well as POMs that can be sold or supplied in an emergency.
This is a distance learning only module. There is no practical component to this module This module is studied over one semester.

Learning objectives
On completion of the module you should be able to:
- make management decisions on the appropriate management strategies for minor eye conditions affecting the anterior eye
- demonstrate a detailed knowledge of ocular therapeutic drugs that are GSL medicinal products, P medicines and POMs that can be sold or supplied in an emergency
- demonstrate an understanding of how to monitor the response to treatment, review both the working and the differential diagnosis, and modify treatment or refer/consult/seek guidance as appropriate
- formulate, recommend and justify (by providing evidence of appraisal of the literature) an appropriate management plan
How the module will be delivered
This module will be delivered through online Xerte presentations and lectures delivered via Learning Central, the University’s e-learning system, with supporting resources and references supplied. There are interactive case discussions and other teaching in webinars, and formative assignments are offered to guide and enhance learning.
Discussion boards accessed via Learning Central will provide a platform for you to discuss any questions or queries that come up throughout the term with both the course tutors and your peers.

How the module will be assessed
You will be recommended to submit a formative short answer to obtain feedback in advance of the summative coursework.
- Written coursework (100%): You will be presented with scenarios that represent typical patient presentations in UK practice. You will be required to research these and present in short answer format formulate, recommend and justify an appropriate management plan
