The Rt Hon Lord Bingham of Cornhill

Staff from Cardiff Law School are saddened to learn of the death of Lord Bingham, who died on Saturday, September 11th 2010.

One of the UK's most distinguished judges, Lord Bingham held three of the top legal posts in the country: Master of the Rolls from 1992-1996, Lord Chief Justice from 1996-2000, and Senior Law Lord from 2000-2008.

Professor Gillian Douglas, Cardiff Law School said: "Cardiff Law School is saddened to learn of the death of The Rt Hon Lord Bingham of Cornhill.

"The School was honoured to welcome Lord Bingham to Cardiff University on two occasions, to deliver important public lectures on aspects of the law.

"In 2005, he gave the 2005 British Academy Maccabaean Lecture on 'The Judges: Active or Passive?' and he returned in 2009 to talk on the impact of international law on the development of English law in his lecture, 'Wider still and wider', as part of his Hamlyn Lecture Series, Widening Horizons.

"Staff, students, the local judiciary, members of the legal professions and the public were privileged to hear Britain's most distinguished jurist of the post-war era, who was extremely generous of his time in discussing his ideas with members of the audience, especially law students.

"The School offers its condolences to Lady Bingham and the members of his family and mourns the loss of a judge who contributed so much to upholding the fundamental principles of the rule of law."
