Michael Chiles

My father Michael John Chiles died peacefully on 25 April 2017, aged 80.

He enjoyed an extensive career at Cardiff University, beginning in 1977 as Director of Studies at Cardiff University English Centre for Overseas Students (CUECOS), now the International Office. Later he took over the position of Head of Department, when Francis Harris retired, and CUECOS was renamed English Language Centre for International Students. He retired in 1998.

My parents met at Cardiff University 60 years ago, where they were both students. He remained extremely active in university circles as Secretary for the Association of Past Students. He invigilated students’ summer exams, and was a popular regular in his favourite haunt, the Staff Dining Room in Aberdare Hall.

His family and friends are celebrating his life on Saturday 20 May in Aberdare Hall, 15:00 - 18:00. All who knew him are very welcome.
