Salters Chemistry Festival at Cardiff University
20 May 2014

On Thursday 15th May the School of Chemistry hosted the annual Salters' Festival of Chemistry, welcoming sixty Year 7 and 8 pupils from fifteen different schools from across Wales.
The Festival involved two fun-packed laboratory-based sessions, followed by a presentation by Dr Dayna Mason, and the final prize-giving. The morning Salters' Challenge involved a forensics investigation to solve a murderous crime! The students used chromatpgraphy and test-tube reactions to analyse samples collected at the scene of the crime, and from the suspects. The afternoon University Challenge asked the students to produce a 'Rainbow Indicator'; the pupils were tasked with making mixtures of indicators that gave the best range of colours for different pH solutions.

The School of Chemistry would like to thank the Salters' Institute representative Audrey Strong, all teachers and pupils for attending and making the day such a brilliant and fun success.
The Chemistry Festivals are an initiative organised by the Salters Institute (www.saltersinstitute.co.uk) in collaboration with the Royal Society of Chemistry (www.rsc.org).
