Cardiff University Alumni at World Rowing Championships 2017
2 October 2017
Two Cardiff University Alumni, Tom Barras (Physiotherapy) and Rebecca Girling (Psychology) represented Great Britain at the World Rowing Championships, in Florida, U.S.A. this weekend.
The Championships took place over eight days in Sarasota – Bradenton with a nineteen crew and 73 athlete strong Great Britain team.
Tom Barras, in his debut World Championship, produced some phenomenal performances soaring through the single scull heats and semi-finals to reach the final where he beat World Cup winner Robbie Manson and the Rio Olympic silver medallist Damir Martin, to claim bronze. A sensational performance to finish 3rd in the world in only his first year as a senior.
Rebecca Girling, also at her debut World Championships, was a member of the (W4-) Women’s 4 who won the B final and placed 7th overall, a great result from the quartet.
Great Britain finished the Championships with seven medals across the team and 8th in the medal table. A hugely positive result and with three years until Tokyo 2020 the future looks bright for many athletes part of this Great Britain team.
