Criminology community come to Cardiff for prestigious conference

More than 1100 delegates from across the world visited Cardiff University for the European Society of Criminology annual conference.

From 13-16 September, delegates from the UK, Europe, North and South America, Australia, Africa and Asia attended the conference hosted by the School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University.

Plenary speeches from academics and government officials covered such topics as policing, criminal justice and the impact of technology on crime and security, as well as one addressing the topic of gender-based violence – the first time such a plenary has been held in a mainstream criminology conference.

Professor Amanda Robinson, Professor of Criminology and one of the conference organisers and speakers said: “We were absolutely delighted to host the 17^th annual conference of the European Society of Criminology and delighted more so with the brilliant feedback. One delegate claimed it was the best University-organised conference they had ever been to.”

Outside of the conference activity, delegates were treated to a performance by a Welsh male voice choir at the opening reception. Nods to the University’s heritage were provided through welsh cakes and bara brith at each refreshment break, while conference materials all displayed the Welsh dragon.

Professor Tom Hall, Head of School, praised the work that went into making the conference a success: “There can be no doubting the hard work put in by the academic team, professional services support, student helpers and many more. Events like this are part of the fabric of university life, and will have put Cardiff on the map for all those who attended. I understand that this was the largest academic conference ever held at Cardiff University and am very pleased it was our School that led the way.”
