Cardiff University’s School of Geography and Planning is celebrating a prestigious award nomination.
Jon Anderson, Professor of Human Geography and Director of Teaching and Learning at the School, has been shortlisted in the Outstanding Research Supervisor of the Year category at the 2017 Times Higher Education Awards.
The nomination recognises Professor Anderson’s exemplary and enthusiastic approach to research supervision, which has, over the years, garnered much positive feedback from his students. Professor Anderson provides high levels of pastoral care, creating a supportive and open environment for candid discussion and academic debate.
The School of Geography and Planning is committed to enabling its students to achieve their ambitions. It encourages academic creativity, originality and rigour, within a dynamic and diverse community of students and faculty.
Discussing his nomination, Professor Anderson, said: “It’s great that the School of Geography and Planning has this recognition, firstly for the quality of its PhD students which come from many countries around the world and undertake cutting edge research on a range of topic areas. Secondly, it also acknowledges the support systems put in place to enable these students to reach their potential in whatever career they choose following their PhD. All these students benefit from engaging with supervisors who offer intellectual insight, provocative discussion, and pastoral support in order to make their research experience a stimulating and rewarding one.”
Head of School, Professor Paul Milbourne, added: “I would like to congratulate Jon on being shortlisted for the Times Higher Education Awards. It is recognition of the tremendous support and encouragement he provides to his research students, and, more broadly, the culture and research environment we have created in the School. We are committed to helping our students develop innovative and relevant research during their studies with us and Jon has played an important part in making this happen.
“I wish Jon well at the November awards ceremony.”
