16 August 2017
Cardiff University is named as one of the top 100 universities in the world and 9th in the UK in an influential ranking of global institutions.
The Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities league table for 2017 ranks the University 99th – its highest position since the table began in 2003.
The table, which lists the top 500 universities in the world is recognised as a benchmark of international university performance.
The University also improved its national ranking for the third year running, ranking 9th out of 38 UK institutions listed in the top 500.
Cardiff is Wales’s only university listed in the top 100 and one of only nine in the UK. Among Cardiff’s successes in the league table are five top 100 subject rankings in the social sciences category, three top 100 subject rankings in the medical sciences field, and two top 100 subject rankings in the life sciences category.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan said: “I’m proud of our progress in this internationally important league table...”
The league table is produced annually and is based on indicators including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers and the number of articles published in the journals Nature and Science.
