Top engineering honour for Cardiff Professor

A Cardiff University professor has been named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

Professor Paul Tasker has been recognized for his contribution to microwave measurements. He leads one of the world's leading university microwave research groups at Cardiff University. The IEEE considers "his contributions have changed the practice of microwave engineering" and his work as an engineer/ scientist has made a fundamental contribution to both microwave measurements and their practical application to transistor models.

The IEEE is the world's largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. It serves a global community of 400,000 members in 160 countries through its highly cited publications, conferences, technology standards, and professional and educational activities, and is a leading authority on a wide range of areas from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics.

Professor Tasker joined Cardiff School of Engineering in 1995, after working at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics in Freiburg, Germany. In 2007 he was awarded the honour of Distinguished Microwave Lecturer by the IEEE MTT Society. He was elected a Fellow of the IET in the same year, and he is also a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.

The IEEE Grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. The total number selected in any one year cannot exceed one-tenth of one- percent of the total voting membership. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognized by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.

The Director of the School of Engineering, Professor Phil Bowen, congratulated Professor Tasker, saying, "This is a very prestigious honour and it is formal recognition of Paul's world renowned research profile as leader of the microwave engineering research group here at Cardiff. The School is delighted to see Paul's commitment and achievements recognized in this way."
