Paul Spencer remembered in renaming the New Lecture Theatre
3 February 2014
The 'New' Lecture Theatre was renamed the 'Paul Spencer' Lecture Theatre in a ceremony held in the theatre on Friday January 31st 2014 in the presence of his widow, Avril, and members of the family.
Professor Gary Baxter, the current Head of the Cardiff School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, welcomed Avril and the other members of the Spencer family, former and current members of staff and other invited guests to the School. He gave a brief outline of the significance of Paul Spencer's career to the development of the School including the major expansion of facilities after the merger of the two University of Wales Colleges in Cardiff. Paul Spencer was Head of the then Welsh School of Pharmacy for nearly two decades from 1978 to 1997, making him second only to Vernon Lloyd in length of service as Head.
He was a member of University staff for over three decades and was promoted to Pro-Vice Chancellor for the University Estate for five years near the end of that time. As such he was instrumental in acquiring the Glamorgan Building for what has become Cardiff University.
Avril Spencer, Paul's widow, unveiled a plaque and then responded on behalf of the family, including her three children, Rosemary, Isobel and Jonathan, who deeply appreciated the honour paid to their father.
To conclude the celebrations, refreshments were served in the adjacent workshop area.
