Protest music and song

19 January 2015

Five songs that shook the world
A University graduate has been commissioned for a new digital project exploring protest music and song through social media.Occupation - Five songs that shook the world has been co-commissioned by Welsh National Opera and The Space.

As part of the project, five composers including School of Music graduate Dan-Wyn Jones, are composing original works in parallel to acts of protest and crisis around the world. Songs by the first four composers - Carleen Anderson, Judith Weir, High Contrast, and Cerys Matthews - are available to listen to and download online.

Dan-Wyn's piece will be released on 23 January 2015 and will reflect the role of social media in providing the public with a voice. He is currently digitally crowd-sourcing comments and opinions which will be collated to create a composition using public words and ideas. You can express your views on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #Song5 or by using theform on the project website.

Dan-Wyn completed his undergraduate degree and MMus in Composition at the University. Discussing the project, he said: "The world is a diverse and fascinating place and I hope to showcase a snapshot of the paths of thought that exist in the world. The song will be a celebration of free speech, of protest, of opinionated and indifferent people."

Visit the project's blog for an interview with Dan-Wyn Jones where he discusses the creation of a crowd-sourced composition, his personal relationship to protest, and his musical influences.
