Centre for Student Life role for BAM
5 April 2017
Leading construction company BAM has been named as preferred bidder to carry out pre-construction services for Cardiff University’s £50m landmark Centre for Student Life.
The Centre for Student Life is a major investment in the student experience and part of the University’s biggest campus upgrade in a generation.
Work is due to start later in 2017 and the new facility, a partnership with the Students’ Union, is expected to be completed for the 2019/20 academic year.
The Centre will create a central hub for student support services as well as offering modern, flexible social learning spaces and a technology-rich 550-seat lecture theatre.
It will make support services more accessible to students, including those based outside the Centre’s Cathays Park location.
Professor Amanda Coffey, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Student Experience and Academic Standards, said: “To maintain our status as one of the top universities in the country, it is vital that we are able to compete with the very best institutions and provide facilities of the highest standard...”
“The Centre is part of an ongoing £600m investment in our campus, including £260m to provide world leading facilities for our students.”
Craig Allen, Construction Director for BAM, said: “Our appointment reflects the strength of the relationship we forged with Cardiff University working with them on the Hadyn Ellis and CUBRIC (Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre) buildings.
“It also reflects BAM’s ability to meet the emphasis on the quality and buildability for what is a complex scheme. Good quality partnerships will be crucial for the realisation of this exciting development for students’ lives.”
The Centre was designed by award-winning architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios which has a formidable track record with high-profile public buildings.
