In February, the European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute opened its doors to leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, who was keen to learn more about the Institute’s work on developing new cancer treatments.
Mr Davies was given a presentation on the concept of Cancer Stem Cells by Dr Richard Clarkson, Senior Lecturer of Cancer Research, before discussing the Institute’s work on developing novel therapies with Deputy Director, Dr Matthew Smalley. The visit included with a tour of the laboratories and demonstrations of some of the research techniques employed within the Institute.
Mr Davies said, “It was a huge pleasure to visit The European Cancer Stem Cell Research Institute, and see the innovative work they are doing. They are at the forefront of the fight to beat cancer, and it is amazing to think it is right on our doorstep.”
“It was fascinating to see the high level of work they are doing, and it is vital we support it. I am hugely grateful to Professor Thomas, Professor Murray, Dr Clarkson and Dr Smalley for taking the time to meet and show me their projects in such detail.”
It has been a busy couple of months for the Institute, with other visitors including Craig Williams, MP for Cardiff North, Dr Ian McKay from the Department of Health, and over 120 sixth form students for a World Cancer Day event.
