University’s starring role
31 August 2012
Time Lord fans keep your eyes peeled for some familiar locations in the latest series of Doctor Who. In addition to filming on campus earlier in the year, the team behind the hit BBC One series were back at Cardiff University recently putting the final touches to the Christmas Special.
Eagle-eyed fans of the show spotted the crew filming in front of Main Building, having erected their own set of gates there was also a horse drawn carriage on site, suggesting a Victorian theme to the episode.
The University is becoming a familiar figure on UK television screens; over the past year it has featured in Casualty, Sherlock Holmes, Upstairs Downstairs, Torchwood and Being Human to name but a few. It is also set for more air time, with local star Ruth Jones filming the latest series of award-winning Sky comedyStella on campus.
Given the many stunning architectural features that make up the Cathays Park Campus, it is no surprise that producers are looking to incorporate it into their productions.
The University's Chief Operating Officer Hugh Jones said: "It's really exciting to see our outstanding buildings featured in such renowned programmes as Doctor Who. Our rising profile in this area really does signal that Cardiff is well and truly on the map and highlights what an exciting and vibrant city it is to study and work in."
If you think a location within your School or Department has star potential and you would be happy to host a film or television crew in the future please email the public relations office with information and, if possible, images at publicity@cardiff.ac.uk.
Should a location manager be interested in the venue, the public relations office will facilitate meetings and help arrange any filming to ensure minimal disruption. As well as seeing your workplace on screen, acting as a location can also bring financial benefits with any filming income shared between the School and others involved in organising the shoot.
