The Best of Iris 2012

The work of some of the world's best emerging and award-winning film makers will be showcased as part of a major University screening.

The Cardiff School of European Languages, Translation and Politics, in partnership with Cardiff's Iris festival, will screen four of this year's Iris Prize award winners.

The Iris Prize is Cardiff's International gay and lesbian short film prize. In its sixth year, the Iris Prize continues to be the world's largest short film prize, valued at £25,000.

It is the only short film prize in the world which allows the winner to make a new film.

Dr Ryan Prout, Senior Lecturer in the School of European Languages, Translation and Politics, who organised the screenings said: "Iris' enthusiasm for supporting new and emerging film talent is only matched by the quality of the work they receive.

"Iris represents the best of the best emerging film making talent and we are delighted to host a showcase of this year's award winning films," he adds.

The University will host a screening of four of the best films from the Iris festival 2012, followed by a questions and answers session with the director of A Stable for Disabled Horses, Fabio Youniss and led by Postgraduate students from the School.

Fabio Youniss is a filmmaker with 10 years experience making promos, corporate films, viral videos and documentaries. He works mainly as a director, but also edits and produces. As well as working for brands, fashion houses and music labels he also writes and directs his own short films.

His short film A Stable for Disabled Horses was awarded the Best UK Short at the 2012 Iris festival, and he was invited to be a member of the 2013 Iris Prize International Jury.

The screenings, which take place on Wednesday 12th December, 5pm at 65-68 Park Place, will feature the following short films:

A Stable for Disabled Horses- Fabio Youniss

Directed by the UK's Fabio Youniss, the film features the lead character Kenoute's decision to move back to Norway. On his return his best friend Benny throws him a surprise party. It soon becomes apparent that Benny has a secret that their friendship might not survive but which he has to get off his chest before Kenoute leaves for good.

The Wilding- Grant Scicluna

Produced by Australian Director, Grant Scicluna, the film features juvenile inmate Malcolm's offer of parole and his emotions between his chance for freedom and protecting the one he loves.

These Empty Streets- Jarrah Gurrie

Austrialian Director,Jarrah Gurrie's film features lead character Susie who while searching for her missing son Stuart, encounters his crush - Pauly, a wayward traveller. Stuart meanwhile, is plotting his escape from small town melancholy. When all three are reunited, in a compromising situation, Susie is forced to face that her boy has grown up. She must let him go.

Yeah Kowalski
 
Directed by US Director, Evan Roberts the lead character, Gabe Kowalski is a late bloomer, who goes to great lengths to impress his classmate crush, Shane.
