RCN Wales Nurse of the Year Awards 2016

Sally was runner up in the Nurse Education category at the Royal College of Nursing in Wales 2016, Nurse of the Year Awards 2016, she is a Senior Lecturer at Cardiff University School of Healthcare Sciences and has a clinical background and teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes specifically cancer, genetics, palliative and end of life care, research and ethics.

Sally has dedicated her academic career to the pursuit of educational and research excellence covering a diverse range of nursing themes and matters.  As part of the BSc in Clinical Practice pathway she developed an ‘End of Life Care’ module for registered nurses.  This ground-breaking work includes nurses, allied health professionals working in the community, hospitals, nursing homes and third sector organisations.

Recognising that the demographic of cancer was changing Sally also led a team of academics and patient partners in the development of the undergraduate nurse cancer education.  The focus was to shift attitudes and culture of nurses away from cancer as a life-end condition towards cancer as a long-term condition.  The patient stories are rich in learning experiences that are long-term memorable and long-lasting.  This was evidenced by an evaluation which has recently been published by the European Journal of Cancer Nursing.
