The Welsh Government is funding new research into nurse staffing levels, to be undertaken by researchers from the School of Healthcare Sciences.
Nurses make up the largest workforce in the NHS. This study, titled 'An appraisal of nurse staffing levels on acute adult wards', will look at the ways in which nurse staffing levels are set and monitored in adult acute services in Local Health Boards in NHS Wales.
The study will provide a rapid appraisal of nurse staffing research, and will investigate both historical and current measures used to manage nurse staffing levels.
The aim is that the study will be of long term benefit to patients by developing a better understanding of such an important workforce for practitioners, policy makers and the public.
The study is led by Professor Daniel Kelly & Dr Aled Jones from the School's Innovation, Improvement and Engagement research theme, who will work closely with colleagues including Dr Tom Powell, Dr Sonia Vougioukalou and Mary Lynch. The study will be conducted in close collaboration with Welsh Government.
