Success at major management conference
28 September 2016
Cardiff Business School’s teaching and research has been recognised at the 2016 British Academy of Management Annual Conference (BAM).
The conference, which was held in Newcastle between September 6 and 8 2016, highlighted the work of Dr Sarah Hurlow and Dr Joe O’Mahoney.
Dr Sarah Hurlow and current PhD student, Darren Caudle, won the Best Developmental Paper Award in the Leadership & Leadership Development category. The paper is titled Narratives of Learning and Leading in Turbulent Organisations: The Role of Reflexivity with Senior Healthcare Managers.
Dr Joe O’Mahoney, submitted an entry for the BAM Education Practice Award. The submission focused on the work undertaken to modify and enhance the Management Consulting elective of the MBA programme. While the submission, ‘Learning by Doing: MBAs consulting the Third Sector’, did not secure the award, the judging panel deemed it to be of significant merit and recognised it as ‘Highly Commended’.
The innovations introduced by Dr O’Mahoney, which includes an 8 week management project with Third Sector agencies, have greatly benefited MBA students while also helping to promote ethical leadership and achieve greater social understanding. These outcomes are in line with the School’s overarching Public Value ethos and reflect the ambition to engender social improvement alongside economic improvement.
In addition to these achievements Professor Mike Reed, Emeritus Professor of Organisational Analysis, was awarded the Richard Whipp Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades long contribution to academia.
Cardiff Business School will host a capacity building event for BAM's Management, Knowledge and Education initiative in October. The event, entitled Multi-Disciplinary, Grand Challenge-Based Learning, will take place at the Postgraduate Teaching Centre on Friday 28 October 2016 and will see four speakers explore the experience of designing and delivering a problem based approach to learning.
