Helping combat hunger

Staff from the University's School of Planning and Geography will be helping raise awareness of hunger in the UK by taking part in a nationwide trolley push.

Organised by the Trussell Trust, which runs a network of more than 300 food banks in the UK, the event reaches Cardiff on Wednesday 10^th April and will highlight food poverty and the work of the Cardiff food bank.

The University team will join other organisations to process through the centre of Cardiff to collect donations of food and money and help the charity to set up more food banks.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK.

Margaret Roberts, School of Planning and Geography is one of the team members: "In these difficult economic times for us all, Cardiff Foodbank received a 50% increase for desperately needed food than during the same period last year. The Foodbank are thankful that currently donations, volunteers and finance have come in sufficient quantities to cope with demand," said Margaret.

The trolley push starts at 11am outside the Capitol Centre in Cardiff and will follow a route that takes in the main pedestrianised shopping streets. The Lord Mayor will receive the returning procession at 1.30pm.
