Run Grangetown running group launched at Grange Pavilion
30 July 2016
Run Grangetown running group has officially launched from the newly renovated Grange Pavilion in Grange Gardens.
The first meeting was held last week after an open call was made to all those in the area that took part in the IAAF Cardiff World Half Marathon in March this year. Cardiff University's Community Gateway, Grangetown Community Action and the Grange Pavilion Project all helped to launch the group and were astounded by the response to the call. Lynne Thomas of Community Gateway said of the meeting:
"It was a fantastic evening full of passion and enthusiasm for fitness and running and all of the organisers were really delighted with the response to the open call. We look forward to working together to support the start-up of this group and get Grangetown running!"
A Facebook group has now been set up to keep members up to date with running schedules, news and useful running tips, the group is open to all local residents that want to keep fit and meet new people in the area.
The first three runs have already been scheduled:
One Mile Course:
Sunday August 7th – 9.30am at The Marl (Channel View end) – warm up session provided by Cardiff University
Three Mile Course:
Sunday August 21st – 10am at Grangemoor Park
Five Mile Course:
Sunday September 4th – 10am at The Marl (Channel View end)
The running sessions are open to those 12 and over; anyone under 12 must be accompanied by a parent.
Each of the above sessions will be supported by Community Gateway, Cardiff University, Run Wales, Cardiff Volunteering and have a group leader who will co-ordinate the activity. The long-term plan is for Grangetown Running Group to become self-sufficient and have the flexibility to arrange its own runs and activities. To help support this initiative Community Gateway are also offering training sessions with Run Wales to three volunteers, meaning they would then become a qualified run leader.
