Cardiff University spin-out MedaPhor has been voted Technology and Innovation Business of the Year at the 2016 Cardiff Business Awards.
MedaPhor – the global provider of advanced ultrasound training simulators for medical professionals – was shortlisted against three other Cardiff-based technology companies: Circle IT, Net Support UK and Zipporah.
The company, founded in 2004, is headquartered in Cardiff, UK and San Diego, USA, with customers in over 16 countries across the world.
It recently reached agreement with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology to use Medaphor’s ultrasound ScanTrainer in over 2,000 obstetrics and gynaecology certification exams carried out across the United States each year.
MedaPhor’s founder and non-exec medical director, Professor Nazar Amso said: “We are extremely delighted with this prestigious award that recognises MedaPhor's achievements. It is a testament to the hard work of all our team in realising our vision and leading the field in ultrasound education and training through innovative simulation technology. We are proud to be born and bred in Cardiff."
Professor Hywel Thomas, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Engagement, said: “MedaPhor has over 200 systems installed in leading hospitals all around the world and with translation in French, German, Spanish, Mandarin, Japanese and Russian, the number continues to expand.
“MedaPhor’s sales have grown impressively and the company now has over 30 employees in both the UK and North America and has 16 reseller agreements covering Europe, Asia and Australasia. This award celebrates the world class excellence and international reach of a Cardiff innovation.”
The win underscores Cardiff University’s Summer of Innovation, bringing together academics, students and public and private sectors in a series of events to strengthen existing partnerships and turn research excellence into real world answers.
