School of Healthcare Sciences at the Commonwealth Games

Ranked first for physiotherapy in the UK, it is unsurprising that several members of the School of Healthcare Science's physiotherapy team will be heavily involved with this year's biggest sporting event.

As the first of the events takes place in sunny Glasgow today, we take a quick look at who will be supporting Team Wales at the Commonwealth Games this year.

Dr Nicola Phillips: Deputy Chef de Mission

Nicki is a Reader within the School, Programme Manager for the MSc in Sport and Exercise Physiotherapy and academic lead for the University'sInspire Performance Physiotherapy clinic.

During the Games she will be working alongside the Chef de Mission within the Team Wales HQ centre in the Athletes Village, and is primarily responsible or the operational/logistics side of Team Wales at the games and the day-to-day management of the games services within the team.

Trevor Baker: HQ Logistics & Technical Manager

The School's Development and Resources Manager, Trevor will be primarily responsible for management of technical resources and communications systems for Team Wales. He will be based within the Team Wales HQ centre in the Athletes' Village. Trevor was responsible for developing the Team Wales App, a one stop shop for everything you need to know about Team Wales during the Games.

Team Physios

Athletes competing in the games require support from sports physiotherapists for the duration of their stay in Glasgow. As well as providing specialist support to specific teams, all our physios provide support within the Team Wales physio clinic in the Athletes' Village.

Dr Liba Sheeran: Team Physiotherapist- Athletics

Liba is a research assistant within the School. She will provide support throughout the games as a member of the physiotherapy team, and is primarily responsible for the athletics team at Hampden Park.

Rhys Shorney: Team Physiotherapist – Swimming

As Clinical Lead, Rhys runs the University's Inspire Physiotherapy clinic. During the Games he will work as a physiotherapist, primarily responsible for the swimming team at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

Nikki McLaughlin: Team Physiotherapist – Women's Hockey

Nikki is also a Clinical Lead for the University's Inspire clinic. For the duration of the games, he will be working as a physio and is primarily responsible for the Women's hockey team at the Glasgow National Hockey Centre.

And of course: MSc Sport & Exercise Physiotherapy student Sally Peake will be going for Gold in Glasgow in athletics (pole vault). Good luck Sally
