Cardiff Students' Union makes NUS Award shortlist
12 June 2014
The Students' Union Elected Officer team has been shortlisted for the NUS Officer Team of the Year Award. The NUS Awards 2014 are a celebration of the work that goes on in students' unions across the country; from officers and staff, to inspirational students and unsung heroes.
The team were one of 5 from across the UK who were shortlisted for the Award. The other Students' Unions shortlisted are Aberdeen University; Bath Spa University; Blackpool & The Fylde College and Nottingham Trent University.
This year's Elected Officer team has worked hard to ensure that the student voice is heard. Some of their achievements include:
Acquiring a £3.4m investment from the University for re-developing the second floor of the Students' Union building to create a social learning space for students
Working with the University to ensure that the policy of fixed fees for international students was extended to include postgraduate students
Supporting the University's introduction of the Living Wage
The introduction of a new Black and Ethnic Minorities Officer post
Working with the University to develop plans for student social and learning space on the Heath campus
Cari Davies, Students' Union President said: "I've been extremely proud of what the team have achieved but to have the hard work recognised by being shortlisted for this award tops off what has been a brilliant year.
"There are so many officer teams all over the country who are dedicated to improving the lives of students and do an amazing job of it, for us to be listed in the top five is somewhat overwhelming!
On behalf of the elected officer team I'd like to thank all the staff at the Students' Union, they are what make our organisation great and without them the tidal wave of officer ideas wouldn't be realised. We also must thank those at Cardiff University who've been so receptive to so many of the changes and developments we've proposed and lobbied for over the year."
The winner of the category will be announced at the NUS Awards on 3 July.
